Baku Travel
Azerbaijan’s capital was founded 1,500 years ago and is situated on the southern shore of the Apsheron peninsula. Greater Baku consists of 11 districts and 48 townships. Currently, Baku is 3 small town rolled into one, the Old Town (Icheri Shekher), the Boomtown and the Soviet-built town. Although Baku is an industrialized country, the residents are predominantly conservative. Aside from its oil rich land, Baku also boasts of its caviar. Since the Caspian Sea is near the city, sturgeon farming is encouraged. Baku anchors its economy on its oil industry. Commercial oil exploration in Baku started in 1872 and in the 20th century, the oilfield in Baku was the largest. Many expats who work in the oil industry live in Baku, but the tourists are rarely seen in the city. In December 2000, UNESCO declared the walled city of Baku, a world cultural site.
